Bill Ferster
Middleburg, VA
Bill’s work is best summed up as explorations into functional marquetry, where thin layers of exotic wood veneers are carefully glued onto three-dimensional wooden shapes to make objects that blend the space between artistic designs and functional objects, such as lamps. Bill studied design in college in the 1970s, interested in abstract animation. He worked as a graphic artist at ABC’s Good Morning America show before opening up a boutique animation studio in 1980. He earned an EMMY award for creating the first digital   nonlinear editing system in 1993. In his mid-40’s, Bill earned a PhD in education from UVA and taught in the education, media, and history departments, until retiring in 2021.Â
